Don Larsen and Yogi Berra - 1956 WS Perfect Game - Autographed Baseballs with 2 Ball Display Case Don Larsen and Yogi Berra - 1956 WS Perfect Game - Autographed Baseballs with 2 Ball Display Case The day was October 8th, 1956. It was Game 5 of the World Series. Don Larsen was on the mound. Yogi Berra was behind the plate. There was no reason to think that history would be made on this day. But on that fateful night, in one of the most unlikely events in baseball history Don Larsen retired each and every one of the 27 batters he would face and recorded the only perfect game in World Series (or post-season) history.

Most of the time, they end up struggling and even losing power. Why? Wanting to hit the ball too hard creates muscle tension prior to the swing and it is a well-known physiological principle that muscle tension slows the muscle down. In order to generate explosiveness, bat speed, and power, you need to have your mind and nervous system alert but your muscles relaxed, ready to fire. You want proof of that? Take a look at sprinters prior to a race or professional tennis players before receiving a serve, they do all they can to stay relaxed so that can react quickly and explosively. They know that muscle tension will kill their reaction time and their power. The key is not to try to put the ball out of the park every single time but just look for a solid hard contact using sound fundamentals. You want to be relaxed, tension-free, prior to the swing and explode into the ball as it arrives. Your body needs to be relaxed but ready to fire at the same time. It’s sometimes a hard concept to g …

As far as I am concerned, he has paid his dues. Another championship year almost gone by and nothing. Pete Rose has fueled many conversations both good and bad over the years, but I think that everyone can agree on this, especially with the watered down version of enthusiasm used in Major League Baseball today. No one player in my 35 years plus of watching baseball games, played the game with the spark and fire that came out of this players body. If I see NY Mets centerfielder Carlos Beltran take another 3rd strike down the middle for the last out of the NY Mets season and smile, I am going to drop three cookies, and I am not talking oatmeal here. Plus My tv set is going to suffer some ill-feated damages. How in the world, can Baseball’s Superstars look us in the face today and say “Yeah, I drank some soupy substance, because someone told me I would heal twice as fast as Wolverine from the X-Men” and turn a 1 year rehabilitative stint into a two month rehab. If you get 1 point for every ten yards but six for a touchdown, a back that is placed in goal line situations could outscore a back that runs for over 100 yards. This is the most important rule and that is why I have placed it first. 2. You must participate in a live draft. If you auto set your draft it can lead to disaster. If your league does not have a live draft it will be hard for you to react to what the other players in your league are doing. If you see all running backs going in the first two rounds but you have all your picks go and you have two quarterbacks set next then you will be stuck with a two quarterbacks and no one else in your backfield. It is critical that you are available on draft day for your team to be set up to win your league. 3. The First Round is already set for you - In the first round remember that you are looking to draft the highest fantasy point player on the board. That means that with the exception of maybe Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, you are going …

This is not the time or place to be working on mechanics. It’s already hard enough for hitters to make the necessary adjustments needed to what the pitcher is throwing them without their head swimming with what every coach(and parent sometimes not even their own parent) within ear shot telling them what to do or not to do when in the box and when they swing. It’s no wonder so many young hitters struggle not only with their swing, but even more tragically in most cases their confidence. The problem is that most of the time they are hearing a variety of different cues: “swing down”, “keep your elbow up”, “don’t dip your back shoulder”, “keep your head down”, “you’re pulling your head out”, “stay tall”, “stay back”, “swing level”, “quit doing (this)”, quit doing (that), (insert one you’ve heard or said here); …and to add confusion to confidence destruction, some of the things they hear are physically contrary to each other even to actual physics itself. Have you ever tried to “stay bac …

Drill 1-Grapevine Purpose: To improve the footwork, concentration, and catching ability of all fielders while they move in both directions. Procedure: The coach stands about 10 feet in front of a line of players facing her and takes the ball from the first player in line. The coach points to the right. Player turns shoulder and hips to that side and runs perpendicular away from the coach. After about three or four steps, coach points in the other direction. Player, using the crossover step, turns the other direction, still running in a straight line away from the coach, never losing sight of the ball. After another three or four steps, coach points in original direction. Player then repeats previous crossover step and …

Colorado tourism and sports owes much to the NFL fame of the Denver Broncos. The NFL Broncos have entertained Denver since 1960. Denver sporting events are constantly sold out, although Broncos fans who have handed over first-class prices characteristically locate tickets in the less expensive grey market. Sports fans visit INVESCO Field as well as the Denver Broncos athletes’ room during the players down time and when the team is away. Since 1993, the Colorado Rockies Baseball team has been recognized as a Major League Baseball team growing in fame. The player’s weight should be evenly distributed on both feet to start. When the player begins the trigger, or start of the swing, some of the weight will then shift to the back leg. These subtle movements were not always clear to me. I learned most of this from watching our team take hitting instruction from a professional instructor. Some people will groan about paying someone to help a youth baseball player learn to hit properly. I must say years ago I was not a believer in hitting lessons. I thought I already knew all about hitting. My child has always been able to hit well, mostly due to natural talent luckily. My child was asked to play in a tournament with a travel team. This team used hitting instruction. As I watched how much it helped my child improve, I wanted to know more. The best baseball swings are usually short and compact with a smooth follow through. Most parents teach their kids to take a long stride. I was guilty of this this. I also let their arms drop down too lo …

But they’ve been lagging other manufacturers in developing composite bats. They’ve upped the ante in 2009 with a spankin’ new design that is unique in the industry, and have added a lower cost composite to try and surround Easton in this category. Here’s the breakdown of what they offer: 100% Composite: Triton - Three piece, 100% composite bat with Louisville’s stiff handle design. Louisville’s has finally responded to Easton’s multi-piece bat design with a three piece bat. But they claim this three piece bat is bonded into one piece? Does this make sense to you? Me neither. Louisville has to either admit multi-piece bats are worth it, or stick to a true one piece design. I’ve hit with the Triton and seen high school kids use it in games. I’m currently undecided on this bat and would recommend the Easton IMX to experienced players who want a high priced 100% composite bat. TPX Omaha Comp - The Omaha has been a quality bat for a long time. This 100% composite, one piece bat has the …

Almost every competitive traveling team uses either a rolled or shaved bat. Since early after the release of composite bats it was determined that they get better and perform at a higher level as they get broken in. A typical bat takes 300-500 hits to start to loosen up and perform at it’s highest level. Once this was determined some people began using bench vices to break their bat in quicker. This was a bad way to compress a bat and people found themselves breaking bats by over compressing them. It was then that the bat roller was designed. It is a much better way of compressing your bat and breaking it in quicker. After a typical roll you’ll bat will perform like one that has 300-500 hits on it and you don’t have to spend hours of batting practice. Perform Increases Are Incredible The typical performance increases range from 30-50 of additional distance after having your bat rolled or shaved. Batted speed will increase to over 110mph vs. the designed performance level of either 98m …

Commissioner Bud Selig and baseball’s powers that be have shifted into full crisis management mode, attempting to minimize the steroid related spillage and restore their venerable product’s reputation. In any other sport, this would not be the public relations nightmare that it is. Baseball however, like no other sport, is held to the loftiest of standards by both its fans and sportswriters. But the reason for the collective outrage over the steroid flap is the very reason that baseball will survive: baseball is a brand that is inextricably connected to the conscience of America. Provided that it takes the appropriate public relations approach, baseball will emerge from this crisis as strong as ever. Performance enhancing drugs are known to be rampant in sports, both amateur and professional, and have been for quite a number of years. Athletes from virtually every sport imaginable have tested positive for steroids including tennis players, swimmers and yes, even a ping pong player bac …

The others will be reserved for later articles. Before I really got into writing this article I scoffed even at the concept of writing it. It almost seemed like a given. I mean, who needs to be told that setting their lineups is an important thing to do? The answer: most of us. I guess it’s similar to asking “who needs to be told why it’s a bad idea to run a red-ish yellow light or go faster than the speed limit?” People commit traffic violations all the time and ‘the man’ has classes devoted to traffic safety for all of those who need to be reminded (I’ve been reminded before…). The man gets paid our hard earned money to tell us something we already know. I’m giving you this one for free. It’s the same way in fantasy sports with setting lineups. How many owners manage to forget to set their lineups? In one of my leagues this year with 15 owners at least 60% of them forgot at least once about setting their lineups for a given day (to be fair it should be noted that I was one of them …

When it happens it is a fun thing to witness. With their passion comes, excitement, competitiveness and curiosity. Young players are eager to succeed and anxiously try to absorb as much knowledge as they can about the game. This article will address some of the most common questions kids ask themselves soon after they pick up the game of baseball. I just bought a new glove and I don’t know what to do with it. My dad told me that I should oil it. My uncle told me to sleep on it. My coach told me to drive a car over it. What should I do? I was at a Chicago Cub spring training one year and I asked one of the players about breaking in a new glove. He mentioned a few pointers that I’ll share with you. He mentioned that most players have several gloves. Infielders will often have more than one that they use consistently. He said that all the old tips worked but the key was not about breaking it in immediately. It was more about how you treated the glove over a period time. Never get your gl …

The following batting tips can help anyone become a better hitter. Select a bat you can handle. If the bat is too light you get no power. If the bat is to heavy you will not get around on the pitch. Learn the strike zone. Don’t swing at bad pitches. It’s a battle. More of a mental game with the pitcher. Relax. He has to pitch too you and the pitcher knows it takes “3″ strikes! Keep your front shoulder and chin tucked in, flex your knees and keep your hands back around your back shoulder. Turn your head so that both eyes are on the pitcher. Don’t look around your nose. Stay on the balls of your feet. If you are back on you heels that extra split second will affect the swing. Keep your head still. Get the bat started, move your hands back and forth slightly as the pitcher starts the wind up. If you like the pitch, go ahead and hit it. If doesn’t look good, then hold up. Take a short step and stride. A long stride will only throw you off balance and slightly delay your swing. Stay on top …
