What we have done is started sending cards to player in a self addressed stamped envelope (SASE). To date we have collected over signed 100 cards this way. Many from all-stars like Mike Mussina, Andrew Jones, Brad Lidge, Fernando Valenzuela and Mark Buerhle. Younger players and retired players are more likely to sign than many of the current big names. Do not expect anything back from Alex Rodriguez or Derek Jeter. Not only is it great fun for my son and I to collect these, they also make great presents and gifts. How many times has you child been given a game for their birthday that they never get into or play just once? A signed baseball card is a unique item. Most kids are not going to see many of these. One of my sons friends is a huge Boston Red Sox fan. He gets that from his dad. Early in the 2007 season, we received two signed cards back from Dustin Pedroia. Maybe I’m more aware of all of the different terms because it’s a game I’m most familiar with, or maybe there is just an extraordinary amount of verbage to learn. Nevertheless, I’d like to discuss a couple important hitting terms that should be understood as you’re working on your various baseball drills. The difference between bat lag and bat drag are immense. And because of the similar sound, they ofter get mixed up. Bad mistake. Let me help explain them both by developing a definition for each. Bat Lag: Bat lag is what all good hitters look to develop while hitting a baseball. As the hands move into the hitting zone it’s important to throw the knob of the bat at the baseball. You may be familiar with that concept as it’s a common phrase (throwing the knob). Doing this produces a result of the hands leading the barrel of the bat which creates whip and bat speed in the baseball swing. Almost every competitive traveling team uses either a rolled or shaved bat. Since early after the release of composite bats it was determined that they get better and perform at a higher level as they get broken in. A typical bat takes 300-500 hits to start to loosen up and perform at it’s highest level. Once this was determined some people began using bench vices to break their bat in quicker. This was a bad way to compress a bat and people found themselves breaking bats by over compressing them. It was then that the bat roller was designed. It is a much better way of compressing your bat and breaking it in quicker. After a typical roll you’ll bat will perform like one that has 300-500 hits on it and you don’t have to spend hours of batting practice. Perform Increases Are Incredible The typical performance increases range from 30-50 of additional distance after having your bat rolled or shaved. The following batting tips can help anyone become a better hitter. Select a bat you can handle. If the bat is too light you get no power. If the bat is to heavy you will not get around on the pitch. Learn the strike zone. Don’t swing at bad pitches. It’s a battle. More of a mental game with the pitcher. Relax. He has to pitch too you and the pitcher knows it takes “3″ strikes! Keep your front shoulder and chin tucked in, flex your knees and keep your hands back around your back shoulder. Turn your head so that both eyes are on the pitcher. Don’t look around your nose. Stay on the balls of your feet. If you are back on you heels that extra split second will affect the swing. Keep your head still. Get the bat started, move your hands back and forth slightly as the pitcher starts the wind up. If you like the pitch, go ahead and hit it. If doesn’t look good, then hold up.
