Instead of You should talk to the player about what he did right followed by what ever error he made mental or physical and then follow up with a positive comment to close it out…commonly referred to as the sandwich technique! Here is something else coaches need to be aware of when it comes to their relationship with their players. Coaches need to be prepared at practice get your stuff done with the players and then on game day kick back call the shots and then let the players have fun and play the game. If players are making mental mistakes then it is back to practice the next day and its the coaches turn to get it going. Game day should be for the players. It goes without saying that coaches need to know their players different personalities and motivate accordingly. Some players need to be pushed harder, they need you to be in their face from time to time, others don’t need much at all to keep them motivated, while some need just encouragement to get the most out of them. I would …

Types of baseball scorebooks In as much as each scorebook may be customized to suit the needs of each team, there are two general types of baseball scorebooks that are available in the market today, the manual and electronic baseball scorebooks. Mostly spiral bound, manual scorebooks are portable notebooks in form, complete with the required stat sheets. Stat sheets included in manual scorebooks can contain those needed for batting positions, game-by-game records for each player, games and innings, pictorial scoring, and prefigured batting averages. Continuous batting and slo-pitch scorebooks are also available. An electronic baseball scorebook, on the other hand, is a software program designed for tracking down a team’s game-by-game and season-to-date statistics. Since an electronic baseball scorebook features more extensive space for information compared to a manual scorebook, schedules, biographical information, and statistical report for certain opponents, may be recorded, on top …

It is the ability to comeback after repeated failure, understand baseball psychology and have mental foresight. It’s true! According to the top professional baseball scouts, players at the AAA level (one below the major leagues) what separates the 5% from the rest of the best is having that baseball mindset, the ability to overcome intimidation and keeping your cool. You see at the AAA baseball level most of the players are equal in their physical baseball talents - it is their mental game that sets them apart. This is an extremely important baseball skill that seems to be overlooked when we teach our kids baseball. So if you want to make yourself a top level coach, even in youth baseball league, it is a good idea to enhance your mental baseball coaching skills. Here are a few ideas mental baseball training techniques you can introduce to even very young players. Teach Optimism and Positive Thinking Baseball is a tough game because there is so much failure. Case in point, a good hitte …

What we have done is started sending cards to player in a self addressed stamped envelope (SASE). To date we have collected over signed 100 cards this way. Many from all-stars like Mike Mussina, Andrew Jones, Brad Lidge, Fernando Valenzuela and Mark Buerhle. Younger players and retired players are more likely to sign than many of the current big names. Do not expect anything back from Alex Rodriguez or Derek Jeter. Not only is it great fun for my son and I to collect these, they also make great presents and gifts. How many times has you child been given a game for their birthday that they never get into or play just once? A signed baseball card is a unique item. Most kids are not going to see many of these. One of my sons friends is a huge Boston Red Sox fan. He gets that from his dad. Early in the 2007 season, we received two signed cards back from Dustin Pedroia. We gave one of them to my sons friend as a birthday present. At the end of the 2007 season, Dustin was named the AL rooki …

Howard has been nothing short of spectacular from his first base position, and it appears that he has plenty of good years ahead of him. Howard has already become one of the best players in the league, and he is only 25 years old. Not only does Howard have a great glove at first base, but he can also take care of business when it comes to hitting the ball as well. At this point in time Howard is batting .294; not bad for a guy of his age. But this does not even show his power numbers. Howard has 47 home runs, as well as 122 runs batted in; talk about power! If he keeps up this pace he will easily finish the season with over 50 blasts, and 150 runs batted in. It is safe to say that any team in the league would be interested in having Howard play first base for them, and quite possibly bat clean up. If the Phillies want to continue to build for the future, they will need to keep Howard in Philadelphia. He is one of the best young players in the league, and he has plenty of good years st …

How about that All Star Week? Don’t know where to start with this one, so let’s go with the following: The Futures Game was really something. There are a lot of teams with their young talent being shown off in this game preceding the Home Run Derby and the All Star Game. Once again, in competitions like this the pitching stands out…..both the American team and the International team have lots of good young pitching that should not be that far away from being in the Major Leagues. Josh Hamilton’s display during the Home Run Derby was UNBELIEVABLE!!! I have not had the chance to see anything like that. Trust me, I played in a few of these games and that was really something to watch. I was thinking that maybe he would be tired going into the finals….sorry to say I was right, but really a fun night for the fans and for baseball. Congratulations to Justin……I met him working out at Athlete’s Performance in Tempe AZ…He has turned out to be quite a player. The game itself was a lit …

We all hear the horror stories of coaches whose bad examples of preferential coaching treatment, poor sportsmanship, and negative attitudes seem to hold sway on youth sports. But it doesn’t have to be that way. You CAN be the coach who sets a positive example in these and other areas. What’s more you can lead by example, showing the way for other coaches and parents to see your positive demeanor and honorable character as a yardstick for themselves, perhaps. Even if your behavior doesn’t change another coach’s style of coaching, at least you will always be able to know that you conducted yourself in an honorable and sportsmanlike manner. Certainly, if nothing else, you can be the best possible example for your team’s players, parents and “extended family.” If your players see you as a coach whom they can trust - who conducts himself honorably, and treats the team fairly, they will respond to you better in the long haul. What’s more, they will move on from your team and carry some of t …

So much so, that the non-pitchers think they are all crazy. The funny thing about baseball superstition is they can arise at anytime based on good or bad game experience. Baseball superstitions are fascinating and is embedded deep in baseball folklore. Here are my nine top baseball superstitions. I’m using nine to go with that “superstition” theme - shake a leg! The Top 9 Baseball Superstitions 1. Not Stepping on the foul line when going on or coming off the field Pitchers and managers are always very cautious not to touch that foul line. 2. Eating the same food before every game Wade Boggs, who played for the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees was infamous for eating chicken before ever game. 3. Leaving the Pitcher Alone and Not talking about a No-hitter This is one of the superstitions that almost every baseball player adheres to. The last thing any player wants to do is jinx his pitcher when he has a No-hitter going. The superstition goes - if you talk about it the no-hitter …

What I said then: “A power decline was not shocking for Jones last season considering his extreme groundball rate, but what we saw last season was a bit excessive. The move to Comerica Park hardly helps his cause. The good news is that he joins possibly the best lineup in the game, meaning more plate appearances even though he will be at the end of the batting order. Jones sacrificed power for contact last season, but even so, this is a little soon for a power breakdown of this sort. A good buy-low here.” Disaster. Jones was guaranteed at-bats on the primary side of a platoon with Marcus Thames, and Gary Sheffield seemed long in the tooth. His career average was near .280 coming into the year, and he had hit more than 20 homers in the three seasons prior to 2007, so he was surely a buy-low option. Dead wrong! Jones struggled with the bat early in the season, and he was eventually released and scooped by the Marlins. He was no better with the Marlins and finished the season in fre …

You know he’s still out doing comedy shows somewhere on earth, but you just don’t care. You should already know where I’m going on this, and it won’t be pretty. Worth has come out with the most senseless hype I’ve ever read in a baseball bat review. Then to top it, they promote the acronyms of this hype. This is some of their actual spin, with my sarcastic comments added: - “Performance Inner Core - 2 layers of composite fibers are assembled with polylayers in between and then cured under high heat.” Polylayers in-between? Cured under high heat? As opposed to low heat? - “Rapid Air Vacuum process (RAV) - pressurized mold holds layers in place as air is rapidly vacuumed out of the composite structure.” Oh yeah, I’m buying a bat because air was vacuumed out of it rapidly. Hey everybody my bat’s better than yours because it’s got RAV! - “Epoxy Induction Process (EIP) - a proprietary 2 part epoxy is pulled through the woven …

Even if your some old dude in your 80s you still play Wii with your grand kids. Now lets take into account today’s youth they all if not a vast majority of them play Video Games and little to no outdoor activities, much less sports. So what made Baseball the number one American pastime? Well, lets look at the facts. Back in the day there was no Video Games or PCs only a crappy old TV. So when you got home from school you went straight to watch it, because well you had nothing better to do. Today the average kid gets home from school after spending all day on his cellphone and goes straight for the TV but not always to watch it. More often than not they reach for the TV to play Video Games regardless of the console that is still gaming. Same goes for the older generation, they get home and they too want to play video games be it with their kids or by themselves. All this sets baseball aside, and really all sports I don’t …

If the maximum picks available were 16, and you had 15, the most the leader could have is 16 thus putting you in 2nd place. There is little doubt that going up against that many people will make the contest closer to the odds of a lottery than a contest of skill. Some of these “free” contests offer some very nice prizes, but usually the big cash prizes come from the contests that carry some sort of cash entry fee. Of course now your chances of winning are enhanced as the number of participants is drastically reduced, but then again these contests are usually the ones that draw the very good sport handicappers, the ones who are the serious players in sport betting and handicapping. Almost every Dominican kid wishes to be the next Pedro Martinez or Alex Rodriguez. Same in Cuba where Baseball is also their national past time. However, the truth is that Latino players make up approximately 25% - 28% of the MLB players. The Dominican Republic has the most players in the MLB with 79 while Venezuela is second with 45 (as of April 2004). Puerto Rico is third with 36. What most people may not know is how many Latino players are Hall of Famers. Do you? There are only seven Latin American-born players who are in the National Baseball Hall of Fame but with so many great ballplayers currently playing this number is sure to grow. So who are these magnificent seven? Of course, the great Roberto Clemente (Puerto Rico) is the most known. He was a 12 time All-Star who won four National League batting titles. In addition, he is only the 11th player to reach 3,000 career hits. Trag …
